Scans & Injections
This page is designed to answer any questions you may have about scans & injections, as well as providing wait times and contact details.
Injections – What to Expect
Sometimes as part of your treatment you may be referred for a steroid injection. Injections are used to help reduce inflammation and pain to allow you to move more freely. Injections are performed by a specially trained Advanced Practitioner in the MSK department. If you have had 3 or more injections within a year your clinician will give you some additional information.
For information about steroid injections and arthritis visit Versus Arthritis.
Steroid Injections & COVID-19 Vaccination
National guidelines mean we cannot offer steroid injections too close to a COVID vaccination. This is because steroid injections can lower your immune system for a short time. A lowered immune system can make the vaccine less effective.
Diagnostic Scans – What to Expect
We do not routinely use diagnostic scans to diagnose a condition. They are more commonly used to support further management such as surgical intervention. There are 6 different diagnostics our service refers for (explained below), these are performed by different services outside of MSK. We will send a referral to the appropriate service and they will contact you to arrange an appointment for your scan. Once we receive the results back from them (this usually takes up to 2 weeks) we will arrange a follow-up appointment for your clinician to discuss the results.
What Do These Scans Look At/Do?
Medical Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. See nhs.uk/conditions/mri-scan for more information.
We commonly use MRIs to look at the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Ultrasound Scan (US)
Uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the inside of the body. See nhs.uk/conditions/ultrasound-scan for more information.
We commonly use Ultrasounds to look at the muscles, tendons, and blood vessels.
Ultrasound Guided Injection (USGI)
Uses an ultrasound scan to guide a steroid injection to an exact place. See nhs.uk/conditions/steroid-injections for more information.
The injection can help reduce inflammation and pain, to help you move more freely.
Computed Tomography Scan (CT/CAT)
Uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the inside of the body. See nhs.uk/conditions/ct-scan for more information.
We use CT scans to look at bones and joints for a more detailed view than X-Rays.
X-Ray
Uses a type of radiation that can pass through the body to produce images of the inside of the body. See nhs.uk/conditions/x-ray for more information.
We commonly use X-Rays to look at bones and joints.
Blood Tests
Involve taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm and is one of the most common types of medical test. See nhs.uk/conditions/blood-tests for more information.
We commonly use Blood Tests to look for signs of swelling, or changes to bones.

Private Imaging
If you have had private imaging relevant to your MSK condition within the last 2 years, please be advised that it is your responsibility to contact the private provider to obtain the imaging ahead of your appointment. It is preferable that this is on a hard copy (CD) so we can get the images uploaded to our system.
If you have had imaging relevant to your MSK condition within the last 2 years under the NHS, please contact our team so that we can try and ensure this imaging is available prior to your appointment.
